The development of artificial intelligence (AI) can be dated to the middle of the 20th century, when computer scientists and mathematicians started looking at ways to use computers to simulate human intelligence. At the Dartmouth Conference in 1956, when scientists convened to talk about the possibility of building intelligent robots, the phrase "artificial intelligence" was first used. Since then, AI has quickly advanced and is already a common technology in contemporary culture. AI research first concentrated on creating rule-based systems that could make judgements using pre-established logic. This method, however, had drawbacks because it needed a lot of human interaction and couldn't be modified to account for shifting conditions.
